Crockett Gillmore out five months following knee procedure

OWINGS MILLS – The Baltimore Ravens continue to get thinner at the tight end position.

After practice on Tuesday, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced that tight end Crockett Gillmore will miss five months following an MCL operation. The injury is likely season-ending.

Gillmore suffered the injury during Friday's practice. He went down after hauling in a catch. He spiked his helmet in frustration, and was helped off the field. Harbaugh initially described the injury as a "cartilage bear," but now we know how significant the injury is.

This is the latest of a long list of injuries for Gillmore. After being taken in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Colorado, he has suffered injuries to his back, shoulders, hamstring, and now MCL. These injuries forced Gillmore on injured reserve the last two seasons, and now it appears that streak will reach three years.

Gillmore has never played a full season in his NFL career. He played 10 games in 2015, and seven games in '16.

In his career, Gillmore has 51 catches for 604 yards and six touchdowns.

The Ravens have now lost three tight ends over the summer. In mini camp, Dennis Pitta fractured his hip for the third time and was released. Darren Waller got suspended for the second time in a year and will miss the 2017 season. Now this.

Even though the Ravens have some depth left at tight end, its not promising depth. Ben Watson, the expected starter, is 36-years-olkd and is coming off a torn achilles. Maxx Williams underwent a knee procedure over the offseason, and apparently no NFL player has ever gone through the same operation. Despite that, Williams is back at practice. Nick Boyle missed 10 games last season due to suspension. If he gets suspended again, he will miss a season's worth of games.

After Gillmore's injury occurred, the Ravens signed former New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell. Donnell could become a significant part of Baltimore's offense now.

Following Tuesday's practice, Harbaugh also provided injury updates to the following players:

  • CB Maurice Canady – also underwent a knee procedure. Not expected to miss the season, but timetable for return unknown.
  • G Nico Siragusa – carted off field with leg injury. Severity unknown.
  • WR Breshad Perriman – hamstring tightness. Not serious.
  • WR Quincy Adeboyejo – carted off with back injury.
