The Ravens played their closest game of the preseason on Thursday but they still walked away with a 14-13 win thanks to another strong defensive performance.
Despite playing without most starters, the defense was able to follow the same formula that has given them success so far this preseason. Carl Davis, Chris Wormley and Patrick Onwuasor all had a hand in creating two turnovers. Davis got it started with an interception that would set up the Ravens first touchdown of the night.
Wormley and Onwuasor followed that up by creating and recovering a fumble later in the first half. This turnover would not lead to another score despite setting the offense up in the red zone.
On offense the Ravens only managed to pick up 226 total yards but still scored a pair of touchdowns thanks to some good starting field position. Ryan Mallet got the start once again and ended his night after just three drives. In that time Mallet completed just three passes for 19 yards. One of those passes was a touchdown but Mallet still finds himself unreliable as the preseason comes to a close.
The Ravens scored their second touchdown of the night thanks to a nice red zone run by Bobby Rainey. The 29-year-old running back took the hand off from Thaddeus Lewis and bounced off of a defender while getting to the outside. This smooth move allowed Rainey to finish the touchdown run with a clear lane to the end zone. Rainey finished his night with 42 yards on nine carries.
As of now, it looks like the Ravens have also escaped the final preseason game with no major injuries. Patrick Onwuasor gave everyone a scare when he went down at the beginning of the second half but it would not end up being serious. The Ravens linebacker suffered a stinger at the beginning of the second half but was able to walk off the field and later clear protocol on the sideline.
One of the few negative takeaways from Thursday’s preseason finale was a pair of fumbles committed by Thaddeus Lewis and Keenan Reynolds. The Saints were only able to score three points off of these turnovers but they still had a big impact on the game. At least three potential points were taken off the board when Lewis fumbled in the red zone.
This win caps off a perfect 4-0 preseason for the Ravens. Despite the success, the team will quickly set their sights to the regular season as they build their final roster in the coming days. There are still many questions surrounding the team, especially at the quarterback position, but we will have our answers soon enough when the season starts in a little over a week.
