Welcome to Episode 49 of the Charm City Bird Watch Podcast with site owner Jake McDonnell, editor Nolan McGraw, and author Ian Schultz.

After Jake follows up on a story from the What An Idiot segment of Sunday’s draft recap podcast (3:33), the guys discuss the latest Orioles headlines after the Birds split a doubleheader in Chicago Wednesday night (7:36). Why are the Orioles “protecting” certain pitchers? How did Brandon Hyde’s media presence shake out in his first month as manager? Who are our Players & Stinkers of the week? All of this and more in our baseball segment.

Up next, Jake holds an interview with this week’s guest, co-host of the Purple Reign Show, Matt Wise (40:00). Matt and Jake went over some of the big names the Ravens attained last weekend, either through the draft or through signing rookie free agents. Wise had Twitter threads going through the entire draft and wasn’t shy to share his opinions on the 2019 rookie class.

The football talk continues after Wise’s interview as Nolan & Ian jump back in to break down the significance of Michael Pierce signing his restricted free agent tender (57:12). For Don’t Be A Jerk (1:01:33), the guys talk about Mike Renner of PFF‘s recent comments about Ravens receivers not having a good chance at signing an expensive second contract due to playing in Baltimore’s offense with Lamar Jackson at quarterback.

Episode 49 concludes with the weekly numbers segment (1:14:50). This week we try to guess the most notable players in Baltimore sports history to wear the number 49.
